Yangon, Aug 14 (Xinhua) US Senator Jim Webb has arrived in Myanmar to hold talks with the country's military leadership, according to an official statement Friday.
Webb's visit, the first such visit of a US Congress member to Myanmar in over a decade, is aimed at exploring opportunities to advance US interests in Myanmar and the region.
He will meet the country's top leadership including Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, the statement said.
The visit came days after a court sentenced Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi to 18 months of house detention on charges of violating her terms of house arrest after an American national swam into her restricted lake-side residence in May.
The 54-year-old American, John William Yettaw, was sentenced to seven year's of rigorous imprisonment for his crime.
