The driver was identified as 21-year-old Abhishek Singla, the son of a leading businessman of neighbouring Panchkula town.

Police have informed the Afghanistan embassy officials in New Delhi about the accident.

Said Rehmet Ullah, president of the Afghan students' association in Chandigarh: 'Jawid was a resident of Jowzjan town in Afghanistan and we have informed his family members there. We are making arrangements to send his body back to Afghanistan.'

'We have lost a bright student and a promising football player in the form of Jawid due to the negligence of a driver who was in an inebriated condition at the time of the accident,' Rehmet Ullah told IANS.
