According to the statement, changing requirements of international and domestic travellers clubbed with the need for safety and security, has made it necessary to review the hotel classification norms that were last reviewed in 2003.

The review has been done after consultation with people from the hotel industry and other stakeholders.

As per the reviewed norms, hotels are now required to have a minimum number of food and beverage units and restaurants depending on their location. Hotels are now also required to have a minimum percentage of trained staff from reputed institutes.
