Czech eighth seed Tomas Berdych mounted a comeback to put out Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) while last weekend's Los Angeles semi-finalist Tommy Haas of Germany overcame Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
German Benjamin Becker sent over a massive 27 aces to lift into a second-round confrontation with Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick.
Becker has lost both of his previous matches with Roddick, the top seed who will make his first start since a five-set loss to Roger Federer a month ago.
Ginepri was trying to maintain momentum from his Indianapolis title -- his first since 2005 at the same venue -- but was derailed at the first hurdle in Rock Creek Park.
Becker, ranked 47th, won his 11th match this season against seven defeats.
Becker handed over a seventh double-fault of the match in the closing stages of the final-set tiebreaker but saved himself in the end with an ace to reach the second round.
