Urumqi (China), Aug 2 (Xinhua) Chinese Police have arrested 1,572 people in connection with the July 5 riots in Urumqi in northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, officials said.
The authorities detained more than 1,000 people a day after the riots in which 197 people were killed and hundreds injured.
On Sunday the authorities detained 319 people in connection with the riots. The arrests are in addition to the 253 people detained July 29.
However, a number of detainees had been released who were taken into custody earlier.
A police spokesman would not say how many of the detainees were released and declined to give more information other than the number of people detained Sunday.
