Lucknow, Aug 30 - Two girls died of suffocation after accidentally locking themselves in a car in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh district Sunday, police said.

'The girls, Rufi (3) and Tania (4) were found dead in an Indica car owned by Rufi's father Naseem Ahmed,' Superintendent of Police Ramit Sharma told IANS over phone.

According to Ahmed, he went to meet his cousin Shafiq in the Sarai Meer area Sunday morning and the girls got inside the car as the doors were not locked.

'We reached my cousin's house at around 9 a.m. and both the girls went outside to play. When we started searching for the girls in the afternoon, we found them lying dead in the car,' he said.

Sharma said it appeared that the doors of the car got locked from inside and the girls were not able to open it.

Trapped inside the car for over five hours, they suffocated to death, he said, adding the bodies had been sent for a post-mortem examination.
