Srinagar, Aug 23 - Kashmir police claimed a major success with the arrest Sunday of a top functionary of the Al-Badr guerrilla group in north Kashmir's Sopore town.

'Zahid, the chief commander of the Al-Badr group, was arrested by us in Sopore town. We had been following him since long, and he was arrested without a fight. We recovered a laptop and incriminating documents from his possession,'a senior police official told IANS.

The police officer described Zahid's arrest as a major success in the counter-insurgency operations in the state as he was chief commander of the militant outfit for the last five years.

'He had taken over the reins of Al-Badr five years back from Major Abdullah and had been masterminding militant operations in Kupwara, Sopore and Shopian areas. He was also acting as coordinator between Lashkar-e-Taiba, Al-Badr and other militant groups here,' he said.
