Washington, Aug 21 (DPA) US President Barack Obama extended his best wishes to Muslims around the world Friday as they prepare to begin the holy month of Ramadan.

Obama reiterated his desire to mend relations between the US and Muslim countries that have historically suffered, an effort he began with a major speech in Cairo in June designed to reach out the Islamic community.

'These rituals remind us of the principles that we hold in common, and Islam's role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance, and the dignity of all human beings,' Obama said in a video message posted on the White House's website.

Obama said the US will continue to isolate violent extremists while seeking to empower Muslims in Afghanistan and Pakistan and 'responsibly ending the war in Iraq'.

'America will always stand for the universal rights of all people to speak their mind, practice their religion, contribute fully to society and have confidence in the rule of law,' Obama said.

Former president George W. Bush also delivered similar messages during Ramadan.
