Taipei, Aug 21 (Xinhua) The toll in typhoon Morakot that devastated the country Aug 7 rose to 153 Friday after officials retrieved 12 more bodies, disaster relief officials said.
Officials said 464 people are still missing.
Most of the deaths occurred in the Kaohsiung and Tainan counties, with 87 and 28 deaths respectively. Twenty-one people have died in Pingtung County.
The rescue work is still underway at two villages in Kaohsiung, officials said.
Morakot was the worst typhoon to hit Taiwan in nearly five decades, wreaking havoc across the central and southern regions of the country.
Typhoon Morakot has caused damages worth 13.45 billion Taiwan dollars ($408 million) to the agriculture sector, officials said.
