Kuala Lumpur, Aug 17 - Delegates of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) have re-elected the chiefs of their Youth and Wanita (women) wings, setting the pace for the party's plenary meeting and elections next month.

MIC Youth coordinator T. Mohan won the top post by a big majority while incumbent Wanita chief P. Komala Devi Krishnamurthy narrowly beat her challenger by 26 votes to retain her post, New Straits Times reported Monday.

The new MIC Youth chief garnered 321 votes to beat his challenger S.P. Muthuvelloo who obtained 148 votes.

Muthuvelloo is a nephew of MIC President S. Samy Vellu.

In Wanita wing, Komala received 238 votes to beat her challenger, S. Thangesvari, who received 212 votes.

The former education ministry parliamentary secretary acknowledged the close fight.

Thirty-five delegates, each from the Wanita and Youth wings, as well as another 15 from MIC Puteri were also elected delegates to the party's main annual general meeting to be held Sep 12.

MIC is the country's oldest party of two million-plus ethnic Indians, a bulk of them Tamils, who settled here during the British era.
