Jakarta, Aug 11 - About 4.9 million people are HIV positive in the Asia-Pacific region including in India and China, the World Health Organisation has said.
The HIV cases included people who face a high risk of infection such as drug addicts, prostitutes and clients of prostitutes, Prensa Latina quoted Indonesian Health Minister Siti Padilah Sufari as saying.
Sufari presented the statistics at the ninth International Congress on HIV/AIDS that began Aug 9 in Bali Island.
The report said that more than 95 percent of the infected were in China, India, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Vietnam.
Most infected have no access to anti-retroviral therapy, the report said.
