Islamabad, Aug 9 (DPA) At least eight people were killed in a clash between Islamist rebels and a pro-government tribal militia in Pakistan's restive northwestern region, officials said Sunday.

Fighting erupted late Saturday and continued through Sunday morning in the Khwazai area of the Mohmand tribal district, bordering the Afghan province of Kunar.

Militants attacked the house of a militia leader, Ajmal Khan, in Wacha Jor village, about 35 km from the district's main town Ghalanai.

'Ajmal (Khan) was killed as well as one of his militiamen, whereas the ensuing gunfight left at least six militants dead,' a security official said on condition of anonymity.

Local administration in the semi-autonomous region confirmed the clash and the death of the militia leader and a volunteer, but did not give any count for casualties inflicted on the Taliban.

Encouraged by the government, tribal militias have recently been taking on Taliban fighters in several parts of the region to drive them out of their territories with limited support from the security forces.
