Tata Motors reports 18 percent growth in sales

Mumbai, Aug 3 - July sales of auto major Tata Motors grew 18 percent to 48,054 vehicles as against 40,729 units sold in the year-ago period, the company said Monday.

In a regulatory statement, it said domestic sales of both commercial and passenger vehicles grew 23 percent to 45,599 units as compared to the 37,033 units sold a year ago.

However, Tata's cumulative sales including exports fell one percent for 2008-09 to 171,168 units, from 172,462 vehicles the previous fiscal.

Last month, the company sold 28,408 units of commercial vehicles in the domestic market as against 22,381 units in the year-ago period, reflecting a growth of 27 percent.

Light commercial vehicle sales were recorded at 17,750 units in July, recording an year-on-year growth of 44 percent and medium and light commercial vehicles sales stood at 10,658 units.

Among passenger car segment, Tata Motors sold 2,475 units of its small car Nano since its launch July 17 while Indica reported sales of 8,563 units, up 14 percent over July 2008.

Indigo family, however, recorded 22 percent year-on-year fall in sales to 3,499 units last month. Sales of Sumo and Safari were flat at 2,638 units.
